Figure 14. To compare taste and smell, make taste bags and odor bags for the three flavors of jelly beans.

Look at your results. Do you see any patterns? Can people identify the most flavors using their sense of smell, their sense of taste, or their senses of smell and taste together? Could some people identify flavors that others couldn’t? How important was smell in determining flavor?

Everyone’s taste and smell receptors are slightly different. These differences result from each person’s unique body chemistry, genes, and psychology. Each person may experience the same flavor in a slightly different way. For this reason some people may have an easier time identifying flavors. Even though one smell or taste by itself may not be identifiable, together they reinforce one another, giving the complete sensation of flavor.

Project Idea and Further Investigation

Try giving your volunteer a marshmallow to eat while she is smelling a jellybean. Ask her what she tastes. Does the smell of the jellybean affect the flavor of the marshmallow? Repeat this experiment with different jellybean flavors.
